What is Hair Loss Medication?

By the age of 50, approximately half of all healthy men develop male pattern hair loss (MPHL). It may start as early as 20 or as late as 50 and it can be a distressing condition, especially in recent years where male appearance is gaining notable importance in society.

Common types include male-pattern hair loss (MPHL), alopecia areata, and a thinning of hair known as telogen effluvium.

Hair loss in some people causes psychological and emotional distress, in some cases the distress leads to a fear of social interaction and as a result victims become isolated and depressed.

Fortunately, there are effective treatments available in the EU, in the form of Finasteride and Dutasteride which are both established hair loss treatments for men.

Symptoms and Causes of Hair Loss

The signs of hair loss can occur in a variety of ways, and although quite common and natural for EU men, there are many different causes and some signs can indicate an underlying medical condition.

Balding can come on gradually or suddenly and affect just the head or the whole body.

Symptoms of hair loss can include:

  • Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is a steady thinning of hair on top of the head. This is by far the most common type of hair loss which affects people as they age, and often starts to recede at the hairline above the forehead, or at the crown.
  • Alopecia areata is when patches or circular bald spots randomly appear on the scalp, beard or eyebrows. The skin may become itchy or painful before the hair falls out, but the hair usually grows back.
  • Telogen effluvium is a form of temporary hair loss, and is most noticeable when handfuls of hair may come out when brushing, combing, or washing the hair.
  • Alopecia universalis, or full-body hair loss is thought to be an extreme version of alopecia areata. Although this can be a permanent disorder, in some cases the hair has been known to grow back after a few months.
  • Tinea capitis looks similar to alopecia areata, due to the formation of patches. However, this is a fungal infection and is a sign of ringworm. Unlike alopecia areata, these patches have small black dots where the hair has broken off at the scalp. It may be accompanied by, redness, swelling, and brittle hair that is easy to pull out.

Causes of male hair loss and balding can include:

Male pattern hair loss is believed to be due to a combination of genetics and the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). MPHL is a hereditary condition commonly found in people with a family history of balding on either the father's or mother's side.

Alopecia areata is thought to be an autoimmune disorder, in which hair follicles are damaged by a faulty immune system. Although it is not yet totally understood, scientists believe that the body's own immune system attacks the hair follicles and disrupts normal hair formation.

Other factors such as illness, protein deficiency due to a strict weight loss regime, hormonal changes and emotional trauma can all be causes of hair loss.

Hair loss can also be an indication of medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, and anemia, or as a side effect of medications being used for unrelated conditions.

If you have any concerns about what may be causing hair loss, we recommend that you talk with your doctor about your condition and look into treatment options.

Benefits of Hair Loss Medication for Men in the EU

For some men, the hair around the crown is most sensitive to DHT so this is where hair loss begins. For others, the area around the hairline starts thinning first.

Medication for male pattern hair loss is not selective and it completely blocks DHT so it will prevent hair loss irrespective of your specific balding pattern. About 10 to 20% of hair loss occurs before it becomes noticeable so it is beneficial in the long term to act as soon as you notice hair loss.

The sooner you initiate measures and find tablets for hair loss, the more hair you will keep.

Genetics are the most common cause of hair loss and the usual treatment for this type of balding is Finasteride or Dutasteride. These medications should block hormonal hair loss and regrow your hair for a thicker and stronger hairline.

Hair loss can have a negative impact on a man's confidence and self-esteem and it can lead to anxiety and depression.

Fortunately, DHT blockers are highly effective at preventing balding and promoting regrowth.

While it might take a few months to notice visible results, the reality is that with continued use, hair loss pills can prevent the physical and psychological consequences of hair loss.

How does Hair Loss Medication Work?

Hair follicle miniaturisation is the shrinking of the hair strand and eventually the follicle. The hormone that is responsible for this is dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
These medications work by inhibiting the production of 5-alpha reductase which is the enzyme that causes testosterone in the body to convert into DHT. Tablets for hair loss block DHT at the source, which means that they should prevent further hair loss and promote hair regrowth.

These medications block DHT which slows hair loss in about 88% of men and helps hair regrow in about 66%. Do not expect a miraculous overnight change though, it can take up to 6 months to see results in some cases, because hair loss and growth happen slowly.

Best Hair Loss Medication in the EU

We supply two of the most effective medications to block DHT, and treat some forms of hair loss. However, doctors recommend that all (NSAIDS) medications should be avoided when taking these hair loss treatments.

For the best results always consult with a medical professional before you start a course of medication.

Finasteride 1mg

Finasteride 1 mg tablets are a generic of the well-known brand Propecia which is used to treat baldness and male pattern hair-loss (MPHL) in men. It may take up to 6 months regular use before an improvement is seen with finasteride 1 mg tablets.

If treatment is stopped the balding process will normally resume within a year.

Finasteride 5mg

Propecia 5 mg is a tablet used to treat hair loss in men and is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms.
As with the 1mg dose, if treatment is stopped then the balding process will normally resume within a year.

Dutasteride 0.5mg

Dutasteride is an FDA-approved medication that is primarily used to treat enlarged non-cancerous prostates in men. It is commonly known under the brand name Avodart. Many men without prostate problems find it effective in treating scalp hair loss, and as a result its use in this area has grown in popularity.

7 Natural Treatments for Hair Loss

Although hair loss medications like Propecia and Avodart are proven treatments, and have help many men reduce MPHL by blocking DHL, there are many natural treatments that may be worth trying.

  • Vitamins have many benefits for general health, but they can also be of help for hair loss. Vitamin A stimulates the production of Sebum in the scalp, vitamin E improves blood circulation to help follicles stay productive, and vitamin B is known to reduce greying.
  • Scalp massage with essential oils is also a good way to keep follicles active.
  • Onion juice and garlic juice are said to be anti-fungal, and revitalize hair follicles, while the juice of ginger can stimulate the flow of blood and encourage hair growth.
  • Rubbing green tea into your hair may lower the risk of baldness due to the presence of antioxidant epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG), which can block DHT.
  • Reducing stress is always a good idea, and relaxing activities such as yoga and meditation can also re-balance hormone levels.
  • Biotin can be found in healthy foods such as egg yolk, nuts, and bananas, and is a water soluble form of vitamin H. The body uses this vitamin to get energy from nutrients, and is important for the growth of healthy hair, skin, and nails.
  • Keep yourself hydrated, and drink enough water because one quarter of human hair is water. Staying hydrated by drinking enough water is not only essential for a healthy body but also for a healthy head of hair.

I wish I had tried this years ago. I have taken this medication for a little under 10 months and my hair growth has been exceptional over the last 2 months. If you are thinking of trying these products, you will not regret it. Chris Clark
