What Tablets Can Help You Stop Smoking?

It will come as no surprise to read that smoking is one of the major causes of illness and death in the EU. Each year an estimated 78,000 people die from smoking in the EU, and many more are left incapacitated by smoking-related illnesses.

Smoking increases the risk of developing more than 50 serious health conditions including; coronary heart disease, heart attack, cerebrovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Nicotine addiction is known to cause many less serious health conditions like impotence, and reduce fertility, that have a huge impact on the smoker's life.

With so many people causing their own health issues, smoking is not just affecting individuals it is also adding an unnecessary burden to an already strained health care system.

Thankfully, more and more people in the EU have actually quit smoking, and the majority of existing smokers are looking for ways to quit the habit.

While some people may have the will power to stop on their own, using the medicines Bupropion (Wellbutrin or Zyban) and Varenicline (Champix or Chantix) to relieve nicotine craving and reduce withdrawal symptoms has been shown to increase the likelihood of successfully quitting.

The health benefits of quitting smoking begin in as little as one hour after the last cigarette, and continue to improve as long as there is no relapse and the urge to smoke is resisted.

How Do These Medications Work?

Due to the ever growing number of people aiming to stop smoking and enjoy a tobacco free life, there are a variety of treatments available, but they can be generally categorized into two main groups:

  • Nicotine replacements; these include patches, gum, lozenges, sprays and inhalers.
  • Medications. Two medications that don't contain nicotine.

All the nicotine replacement treatments (NRT) contain nicotine but none of the other harmful chemicals that are present in cigarettes. The small amount of nicotine allows smokers to gradually ease the nicotine cravings and decreases the impulse to smoke.

Our stop smoking treatments do not contain nicotine, and work by making nicotine less effective so it becomes easier to quit.

Bupropion increases the levels of two chemicals in the brain called noradrenaline and dopamine, and decreases the stimulating effects of nicotine on the nicotinic acetylecholine receptors. Tests have shown bupropion doubles the chances of quitting smoking compared to the "cold turkey" method.

Varenicline alsoworks by stimulating the nicotinic receptors in the brain. Varenicline can reduce the enjoyment you feel from smoking cigarettes. Champix was three times more effective than placebo.

When using one of these medications, nicotine cravings as well as withdrawal symptoms decrease and the result is a reduced desire to smoke.

For people who are highly dependent smokers, combination therapy has been shown to be more effective than Champix or Bupropion alone, especially if pre-cessation treatment of nicotine patches are already being used.

Who Can Benefit from Using Pills to Stop Smoking?

Quitting smoking at any age has benefits and the sooner you quit the sooner your body can begin to heal. Using tablets to stop smoking can significantly increase your chance of success.

Statistics reveal that only about 5 percent of people who try to quit tobacco succeed without stop smoking tablets, but more than 30 percent successfully quit the habit when using medication.

The adverse health effects of smoking are reversed with every cigarette that you do not have. Once you successfully quit, the risk of life-threatening health conditions such as cancer reduces significantly. The body begins repairing itself and within 6 hours, your blood pressure becomes more stable and your heart rate slows down.

Once you have managed to go without a cigarette for 1 day, almost all of the nicotine is out of your bloodstream. Oxygen can reach your heart and muscles more easily as the level of carbon monoxide in your blood decreases. Within a week you will have higher levels of protective antioxidants and your sense of taste and smell may begin to improve.

There are additional benefits to stopping smoking other than these improvements to personal health. Passive or second hand smoking (SHS) can have an effect on the family, and friends around you.

Children are particularly vulnerable to (SHS), which increases the risk of developing breathing disorders, infections, and meningitis. These (SHS) health issues create over 300,000 EU doctor's appointments and about 9,500 hospital patients each year, at a cost of about £23.3 million to the British tax payer.

In the long term, significant health benefits can be attained after successfully quitting with stop smoking tablets. After 1 year, your lungs will be healthier and breathing will become easier than if you had continued smoking.

Within 2 to 5 years, the risk of heart failure and stroke drastically decreases. After 15 years the risk of heart attack and stroke is almost the same as a person who has never smoked.

Varenicline and Bupropion are two of the most popular and effective medications in the EU and are probably more well-known by their brand names, Champix and Wellbutrin.

In general, these medicines are considered to be a safe medication for most people, but caution should be taken in certain patients, particularly those with mental health problems.

People in these categories should not take Champix or Bupropion:

  • Under the age of 18
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Severe kidney failure
  • certain mental health problems

Can Vaping Help to Quit Smoking

It has been estimated that around 3.2 million adults in the EU are using e-cigarettes. Because vaping is a relatively new way for people to get nicotine into the bloodstream, scientists are still researching e-cigarette's effects on human health.

In general, experts estimate that vaping can be up to 95% less harmful than normal cigarette smoke, the e-liquids can still contain harmful chemicals such as lead, and some flavorings may cause cancer.

When care is taken to choose an established form of e-liquid, it is thought that vaping help quit smoking in a similar way to other NRT treatments.

While it proved somewhat ineffective in treating depression, many patients who took it reported that it took away their desire to smoke. The focus of the medication then changed to a treatment for smoking cessation.

Varenicline

Varenicline is the active ingredient in Champix / Chantix, and it is a medication that was developed to help people stop smoking.
